Like was a reaction to the strange, effortless affection of Facebook. Publicly showing that you “like” a person, place or thing is a matter of clicking a button. There’s no degrees of affection. How you feel for your child is the same as how you’d feel for a donut, and the world is divided into affection or disinterest.
This piece featured silkscreened pogs and lasercut slammers (with pictures of my daughter and our cats) and photographs of food with hand-written descriptions. It was a lot of effort to make all of these things, the opposite of clicking a button. Since it was vended, paying for the items and turning the crank was also a “like” that took effort. I was very surprised at how popular this was. It sold out almost immediately. I guess people like babies, cats and food, even when they belong to someone else!
